How ACA Marketplace Coverage Works

A plain-language overview of the Marketplace, plan choices, and what happens during enrollment.

The Health Insurance Marketplace is a place to review and enroll in individual or family health insurance. Depending on your location, you use HealthCare.gov or a state-based Marketplace. The Marketplace application asks for information used to identify available coverage and determine whether you may qualify for financial assistance.

The basic flow

  1. Enter your location and household details in the correct Marketplace.
  2. Provide the information the application requests, including an estimate of household income where relevant.
  3. Review the plans offered in your area and any financial assistance shown.
  4. Compare benefits, provider networks, prescription coverage, and costs.
  5. Submit the official enrollment selection and follow the instructions for confirming coverage and paying the first premium.

What this website can and cannot do

Educational resources can help explain terms and prepare questions. A general contact form does not submit your Marketplace application. Eligibility and actual premiums are determined through the official process. If someone assists with enrollment, confirm their role and applicable authorization, and review your information before the application is submitted.
