How to Check Whether Your Doctor Is In Network

A practical checklist for checking a plan's network before enrollment.

A doctor being listed on an insurer's general website does not always mean the doctor participates in every plan the company sells. Different Marketplace plans can use different networks, even when they share an insurer brand.

Use the full plan name

Find the plan's exact name, network, and service area. Search the insurer's provider directory for that specific plan, then call the insurer and the doctor's office to confirm participation. Ask about the particular location, clinician, and service—not only the practice's name.

Check facilities and prescriptions too

Confirm hospitals, labs, imaging centers, pharmacies, and any specialists you expect to use. Review the prescription formulary and any prior authorization or step therapy requirements. Save the date of the confirmation for reference.

Understand out-of-network risk

Out-of-network care may cost more or may not be covered, depending on the plan and service. Federal protections apply in some circumstances, but do not assume every out-of-network bill is treated as in-network. Review the plan documents before relying on a network claim.
