A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) is an enrollment window outside annual Open Enrollment for people who meet certain qualifying conditions. The event, the type of coverage lost or changed, the date it occurred, and other details can determine whether someone is eligible.
Examples of events that may matter
Common examples can include losing qualifying health coverage, moving to a new area with different plan options, getting married, or having a child. Other circumstances may be recognized under current rules. These examples do not mean that every situation qualifies automatically.
Document the details
Record the date of the event, identify which coverage ended or changed, and gather documentation that the Marketplace may request. Report changes promptly and follow the instructions for the Marketplace that serves your state.
Check the official rules
Start with HealthCare.gov's Special Enrollment guidance. The Marketplace determines whether the facts meet the requirements. Do not cancel other coverage until you understand the new plan's approval and effective date.
